Né sur les décombres de la première formation des Sisters of Mercy, Gift de The Sisterhood est un album devenu mythique depuis sa sortie en 1986. Cet album s'inscrit même en rupture avec la première période des Sisters, via un son qui évoque bien plus l'électro industrielle sur base de basse répétitive et de rythmes glaciaux, que le rock gothique éthéré des Sisters d'alors.

Gift n'a pas eu de succès à sa sortie, il a été considérée comme une sorte de prolongement artisanal, créé à la va-vite par un Andrew Eldritch qui voulait couper l'herbe sous le pied de ses ex-compagnons. Il est cependant devenu mythique de par sa dimension hypnotique et minimaliste, dans une atmosphère « dark » qui n'est pas sans rappeler les travaux d'Alan Wilder avec Depeche Mode puis avec Recoil.

Même si toutes les chansons ont été composées par Andrew Eldritch, celui-ci ne chante pas, car il était à l'époque sous contrat avec WEA. C'est James Ray qui chante.
